I visited the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville to check out some of the aircraft they have on display. The main attraction at the museum is The Hughes H-4 Hercules (a.k.a. the Spruce Goose). Its wingspan stretches the entire length of the building. At 320 feet 11 inches (97.54 m) it’s longer than an American football field.
The exterior of the airplane is huge — almost imposing. Its an enormous beast. When you see all of the other “normal sized” airplanes around it its size is really put into perspective. When you step inside the belly though it’s a completely different type of atmosphere — peaceful, relaxing, even intimate. Inside, looking back toward the tail, I was mesmerized by the patterns in the framework and how the cables wove their way around this enormous body.
