Since we were so close and enjoyed our previous trip to Italy so much we decided to take a little drive north to the city of Trieste. Trieste is apparently the only free port and free zone in Europe which means companies are taxed very lightly or not at all to encourage economic activity. It is also known as “the coffee capital of Italy”.
This is a picture of the Grand Canale of Trieste. It was an impressive city dominated by Viennese architecture.
We stumbled upon the Museum of History and Art when we visited Trieste, Italy. There was a guy just sort of hanging around the cathedral as we were walking the grounds and he said “hey there is a museum here and it’s free, c’mon”. It looked like it was just a small tiered garden or old cemetery with miscellaneous old Roman broken headstones or jars. It was pretty and peaceful since there was really not anyone else there. Once we walked to the lower yard there was a small handwritten sign leading us indoors. What was inside was truly spectacular. There were hundreds of antiquities. I’ve never seen a sarcophagus up close or a mummy. This museum had both. It was fascinating. It’s really unbelievable how advanced the Romans and Egyptians were so many years ago. Their art forms were so beautiful. So glad we stumbled upon it. As you can see we had the whole place to ourselves.
